Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs written question – answered at on 18 March 2011.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent assessment he has made of the contribution of the UK to the Council of Europe.
The UK was a founder member of the Council of Europe (CoE) in 1949 and has always been at the forefront of the CoE's work, including in its Parliamentary Assembly and its Congress of Local and Regional Authorities. We believe that the CoE's activity should focus on its core values: protection and promotion of human rights, democracy and the rule of law. Our forthcoming Chairmanship of the CoE's Committee of Ministers, from November 2011 to May 2012, will be an opportunity for us to pursue activities and reforms which emphasise these values.
