Cabinet Office written question – answered at on 1 March 2011.
The Cabinet Office has no active research on the effects of income inequality on levels of (subjective) well-being or happiness. Under the previous Administration, the Cabinet Office did publish a discussion paper on Life Satisfaction: the state of knowledge and policy implications (2002) which contained a cursory discussion of this issue. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has been commissioned to develop robust independent measures of subjective well-being and is carrying out a national debate to obtain the views of the public on the dimensions of well-being, which will inform the measures.
