To ask the Secretary of State for Health what assessment he has made of long-term trends in levels of physical activity in (a) children and (b) adults.
Trend data for participation in physical activity are reported in the Health Survey for England (HSE). The results for 2008 survey showed that more boys (32%) than girls (24%) aged two to 15 years met the chief medical officer's recommendation for physical activity. New questions on children's physical activity were used in the HSE in 2008, so these data cannot be directly compared with earlier years.
The percentage of adults achieving recommended levels of physical activity increased steadily between 1997 and 2008, from 26% to 36% for all adults.
