Environment Food and Rural Affairs written question – answered at on 7 February 2011.
Huw Irranca-Davies
Shadow Minister (Energy and Climate Change)
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs whether (a) guidance and (b) regulations issued by the Environment Agency have been modified to take into account the use of hydraulic fracturing for shale gas and coal bed methane.
Richard Benyon
The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
Based on experience to date in the UK, we do not consider there is a need to modify any formal guidance or regulations, but this will be kept under review.
The Environment Agency is the statutory body responsible for operating the robust regulatory regime that is in place in England and Wales to ensure that any environmental risks from the activities listed are controlled. This regime is backed up by both Government and Environment Agency guidance. The Environment Agency has produced a web page which explains its role in regulating these activities.

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
