To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills what recent assessment he has made of the effectiveness of microfinance projects in supporting (a) small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and (b) SMEs led by women.
Mark Prisk
The Minister of State, Department for Business, Innovation and Skills
In June 2010 the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills published an action-orientated summary of the national evaluation of Community Development Finance Institutions (which includes microfinance) for the sector. This set out information on the effectiveness of microfinance projects in supporting SMEs. The report did not break down the outcomes for the projects by gender but support for women is mainstreamed within the CDFI sector.

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
