International Development written question – answered at on 10 January 2011.
To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what steps he is taking to involve diaspora groups in the UK in development projects in their countries of origin.
The Department for International Development (DFID) supports diaspora groups to contribute to development outcomes in their countries and continents of heritage through the Diaspora Volunteering Programme. So far the programme has supported over 400 volunteers to complete placements in 15 countries including Ghana, Ethiopia and Nepal. Diaspora groups are also able to access other DFID supported volunteering or twinning programmes, such as the Global Community Links programme.
DFID also engages diaspora groups in consultations on the design of our programmes via newsletters, events and through the diaspora media.
