The Government support the objective of the Mortgage Market Review to create a sustainable market for all participants. Responsible lending, including to first-time buyers and the self-employed, is essential to support access to homeownership and new housing supply.

The Financial Services Authority's proposals are of great importance to the future of the housing market and deserve wide debate based on the best possible evidence.
