The Government welcomes all contributions to the debate on the Financial Services Authority consultation, including the substantial research commissioned by the Council of Mortgage Lenders. Responsible lending, including to first-time buyers and the self-employed, is essential to support access to homeownership and new housing supply.

My officials have worked closely with the Council of Mortgage Lenders and the Financial Services Authority on these proposals and will continue to do so.
