To ask the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions what recent assessment his Department has made of the merits of rent controls as a method of reducing expenditure on housing benefit.
Policy on rent controls is a matter for the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government. However, the Department for Work and Pensions has outlined a range of measures in the June 2010 Budget that are designed to exert a downward pressure on rents and will save around £2 billion per year by 2015-16.
