To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many civilians were aboard HMS Astute when it ran aground on 22 October 2010; and what the role of each was.
There were 17 civilians aboard HMS Astute at the time of the grounding incident. Of these, 16 were contractors: 11 from BAE Systems Submarine Solutions; two from Atlas, two from Thales; and one from QinetiQ. In addition, there was one civilian on board from the Ministry of Defence.
These civilians were present to support ongoing weapons and combat systems trials and training.
