House of Lords written question – answered on 2nd November 2010.
To ask Her Majesty's Government what alternatives to the Rapiscan X-ray machine will be offered to airline passengers who are at medical risk from radiation.
The Health Protection Agency has undertaken an assessment of the risks from the Rapiscan Secure 1000 X-ray backscatter security scanner. It concluded that the scanner does not give rise to any unacceptable risks to health.
During the consultation, points were raised on whether passengers should be allowed to choose an alternative screening method. These are being considered and will be addressed in the Government's response to the consultation, which is expected to be announced shortly.
