House of Lords written question – answered on 28 October 2010.
To ask Her Majesty's Government what steps they are taking to address the increase in violent and armed crime in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
We are extremely concerned about the recent increase in violent crime in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The Governor is considering a request to the UK Government for short-term assistance to the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force. We will give this careful consideration.
At the same time, the Turks and Caicos Islands Government are taking action to strengthen the penalties for gun-related crime and the illegal possession of guns. The police have also launched a high profile operation on the island of Providenciales which will last for an indefinite period.
