To ask the Secretary of State for Health what recent assessment his Department has made of the effectiveness of the voluntary industry agreement to place health warnings on the labels of alcoholic drinks.

The most recent assessment of the effectiveness of the voluntary agreement was the second stage of independent monitoring conducted using samples taken in April 2009. The results of this exercise were published, alongside a public consultation on options for improving information on the labels of alcoholic drinks, in February this year and are available at the following web address:

The public consultation closed on 31 May and the responses to this exercise are now being analysed by departmental officials, who will be advising Ministers. We will set out our plans for next steps, in the coming months.
