Transport written question – answered at on 27 July 2010.
To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what information his Department holds on whether peak-time train services on the Manchester-Huddersfield railway line are operating at over-capacity.
The Department for Transport does not hold detailed information for every station stop on individual services on the Manchester-Huddersfield railway line. However, the critical load information for peak services arriving into Manchester Piccadilly during autumn 2009, suggests that some trains on this line are operating at over-capacity.
First TransPennine Express, the train operator that provides most services on this route may be able to provide more information. First TransPennine Express can be contacted at the following address:

First TransPennine Express certainly operate services between Manchester Piccadilly and Huddersfield, and do have their problems regarding capacity.
However, Northern Rail operate stopping services between Manchester Victoria and Huddersfield, calling at Ashton-under-Lyne, Stalybridge and Mossley (and others), which, at peak times, must operate at over-capacity, often with only two carriages.
At quiet times of the day, these particular Northern Rail services often arrive with four carriages; two in use, two not in use.
