To ask the Secretary of State for Education what steps are being taken to encourage the teaching of local history in schools.

We intend to review the national curriculum and we will announce the detail of the process for the review in due course. We will restore the national curriculum to its original purpose-a core national entitlement organised around subject disciplines and we will consult widely on it. History is a vital part of young peoples' education and will be covered in the consultation.
