To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what his most recent assessment is of the security situation in Afghanistan.

We recognise that the security situation in Afghanistan remains serious, however, in the past year much has been achieved.

At the end of 2009, we and the United States marines provided security for over 50 per cent. of the Helmand population, which is set to increase in 2010.
