To ask the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government what the average length of tenure for a tenant of a house in the (a) registered social landlord and (b) local authority sector was in each year since 1997.

Estimates of the average length of residence of tenants at their current address in (a) the registered social landlord sector and (b) the local authority sector for each year from 1997-98 to 2006-07 are provided in the table. These estimates are based on data from the Survey of English Housing.

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
