To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what recent assessment he has made of the effect of adding an additional hourly service to the Manchester to London railway line on local commuter services in Greater Manchester.

The Department for Transport meets train operating companies on a four weekly basis to review delivery of rail services and their ability to meet passenger requirements, particularly noting timetable changes.

Performance for the four weeks to 31 January 2009 for Manchester commuter services achieved a level of 91 per cent., which suggests that the timetable is running well.
