To ask Her Majesty's Government whether the number of people receiving benefits has increased in the past five years; and, if so, by what percentage.

The latest available information is that the number of working age and pension age benefit claimants has increased by 2.89 per cent over the five years to May 2008. Within this total, the number of working age claimants went down by 5.81 per cent, the number of pension age claimants increased by 7.03 per cent.
