To ask the Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills pursuant to the answer of 17 March 2008, Official Report, column 861W, on vocational training: prisoners, what plans he has to conduct a new skills audit of prisoners; and if he will make a statement.

Proposals for developing the delivery of offender learning were published in September 2007 in 'Developing the Offenders' Learning and Skills Service: The Prospectus'. The prospectus set out the intention to commission a series of reviews based on criminal justice areas, now to be called Offender Skills Curriculum Area Reviews.

The outcome of the reviews will be to improve the alignment between the supply of learning and skills and the needs of offenders. The reviews will determine the range, type and level of provision to be in place in each prison establishment or area so we can commission a more effective service.
