The police funding formula uses a range of data relating to demographic and social characteristics, which are heavily weighted by changes in population, to allocate grant and reflect the relative needs of each police authority.

When calculating formula grant allocations, the best information available at the time that treats all authorities on a consistent basis is used. Population data is provided by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
