To ask the Secretary of State for Health what discussions he has had with (a) NHS Direct, (b) pharmaceutical companies and (c) other interested parties on the possibility of providing a (i) telephone review and (ii) follow-up service for patients participating in clinical trials through NHS Direct; what assessment he has made of the viability of NHS Direct supporting clinical trials; and if he will make a statement.

The Department has not held any such discussions or made any assessment of the viability of NHS Direct supporting clinical trials.
