Defence written question – answered at on 3 December 2007.
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what percentage of army troops was from (a) Scottish regiments and (b) the Royal Regiment of Scotland in each year since 2003.
While there are regiments which can be considered as having direct Scottish lineage, there is no single recognised definition of a 'Scottish Regiment'. I can, however, advise that since 2003, Regular Army units which recruit predominantly from, and are historically affiliated to, Scotland have represented roughly between 4 per cent. and 5 per cent. of the British Army.
