asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, further to their response to the report of the House of Commons Select Committee on Environment, Transport and Regional Affairs, The Future for Allotments (Session 1997-98, HC Paper 560-1), they still have the option of new legislation concerning allotments under review.

We do not have any current plans for new allotment legislation. Following the Select Committee report we considered options for consolidating legislation, but it was decided that the best way to clarify the legislation was by promoting best practice within local authorities. We have done this by publishing Growing in the Community: A Good Practice Guide for the Management of Allotments in 2001 and Allotments: A Plot Holder's Guide in 2001. It should be recognised that allotments already enjoy far greater protection than other green spaces.
