To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what objectives the Government are seeking to achieve in any new EU Treaty with the aim of placing the European Union on a renewed common basis before the European Parliament elections in 2009; and if she will make a statement.
There is at present no consensus among EU partners on the way forward regarding the Constitutional Treaty or any new Treaty. These issues will be discussed at the European Council in June. It is too early to speculate regarding the outcome of these discussions. The Government's approach to these discussions was set out in my right hon.
