To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what steps his Department is taking to enforce the parking restrictions on zig-zag markings outside schools.

Local authorities have the power under the Road Traffic Act 1984 to make Traffic Regulation Orders that, among other things, put in place parking restrictions such as zig-zag markings outside schools. Where a local authority has Decriminalised Parking Enforcement (DPE) power it may enforce a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO). Otherwise it is for the police to enforce.

The Under-Secretary is avoiding answering the question. The answer appears to be 'child safety is not our job, therefore, we are doing nothing'.

However, perhaps the lengthy response serves to suggest to Jim Dowd he should be enquiring of the Borough Council / Police of Lewisham how the matter lies with them. I wonder what their responses will be, or have been, that an MP should be asking questions.
