To ask the Secretary of State for Health what her Department's latest estimate is of the additional cost required to meet the 18-week waiting time target (a) in 2006-07, (b) 2007-08 and (c) the months April to December 2008.
The 2004 comprehensive spending review provided for an extra £1,000 million and £1,900 million in 2006-07 and 2007-08 respectively for extra out-patient and in-patient activity needed to cover demand growth, existing waiting time initiatives and progress towards the 18-week waiting time target. The current spending review, which will deal with 2008-09 onwards, has yet to be completed.
