To ask the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government if she will make it her policy to introduce an obligation for local authorities undertaking public works projects to display appropriate signage (a) to describe the nature and duration of the work, (b) to apologise for any inconvenience caused and (c) to provide a contact telephone number; and if she will make a statement.

The Government's policy on these matters is set out in the "Code of Practice on the Dissemination of Information during Major Infrastructure Developments" published by the former DETR in 1999. This is available on my Department's website at http://www. communities.gov.uk/index.asp?id=1144499. Copies are available in the Library. There is specific provision for a contact telephone number to be provided at paragraph 3.4.13 of the code. The other matters would appear to be good practice, but would be provided at the discretion of the local authority or other promoter of the scheme.
