To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many (a) men and (b) women have (i) committed and (ii) attempted self-inflicted death in each prison in England and Wales in each of the last five years.
There is no definition of what constitutes an attempt at self-inflicted death, as it is very difficult to measure suicidal intent. For the number of apparent self-inflicted deaths in each prison in England and Wales, 2001-05, I refer the hon. Member to the answer given to Mr. Bellingham on
