Health written question – answered at on 19 April 2006.
To ask the Secretary of State for Health what research her Department has commissioned on the relationship between the amount of control the individual patient has over his or her healthcare and the efficacy of that care.
The Department funds research to support policy and to provide the evidence needed to underpin quality improvement and service development in the national health service and through its service delivery and organisation and health technology assessment programmes, has funded a number of projects of relevance to the hon. Member's question. These include:
A study of patients' and carers' views and choices in their use of primary care services;
A scoping exercise to identify the extent and nature of both current NHS policy and the literature concerned with patient choice and the organisation and delivery of health services;
A randomised controlled trial to assess the impact of a package comprising a patient-orientated, evidence-based self-help guidebook and patient-centred consultations on disease management and satisfaction in inflammatory bowel disease;
A systematic review and economic evaluation of the clinical and cost-effectiveness of patient education models for diabetes; and
A multicentre randomised controlled trial assessing the costs and benefits of using structured information and analysis of women's preferences in the management of menorrhagia.
