Health written question – answered at on 18 April 2006.
To ask the Secretary of State for Health if she will make Crohn's disease a reportable illness.
Under the Public Health (Control of Disease) Act 1984 and associated regulations, notification of a number of communicable diseases is legal requirement. Notifications are necessary to identify and prevent the spread of infectious disease.
No infectious agent has been identified as the cause of Crohn's disease so it would be inappropriate to designate it a notifiable disease for the purposes of the Act.
