To ask the Secretary of State for Health if she will make a statement on the incidence of MRSA in NHS hospitals.

The mandatory surveillance system for health care associated infection started in April 2001 with the collection of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) blood stream infections data.

The latest data, for April to September 2004, shows a six per cent. drop on the corresponding period in 2003. Unbelievable question. What answer was she expecting? Why waste time and money asking the question when there is so much available on the record already
