To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how much crude oil has been produced by the UK in million tonnes of oil in each year from 1999 to 2004; how much crude oil has been consumed by the UK in each of these years; and what the Government's estimate is of when the UK will recommence being a net importer of crude oil.

Figures for UK production and consumption of crude oil are presented in the following table.

Million tonne
Crude oil production Crude oil demand
1999 128 82
2000 118 81
2001 108 76
2002 107 78
2003 98 77
2004 88 82

The figures for 1999 to 2003 from the table are taken from DTI's Digest of UK Energy Statistics while the provisional figures for 2004 come from the March 2005 edition of Energy Trends. Copies of both publications are in the Libraries of the House. The 2004 figures will not be finalised until July when published in the 2005 edition of the Digest of UK Energy Statistics.

The 2003 Energy White Paper noted that the UK is expected to become a net importer of oil on an annual basis by around 2010. This is still considered to be the case.

If you look at the Q1 2005 figures and compare them to Q1 2004 you would extrapolate that the UK already is a net oil importer. I have asked a further question to try to tease this out.

I go into this further on my blog:

This is one of the key economic issues for the UK.

Hi John,

See . Apparently the UK became a net oil importer in May 2004.

I work with Dr Colin Campbell ('peak oil' expert, retired oil geologist) starting up ASPO Ireland. You may already have been in contact with him, I'm not sure. But if not, try and get in contact with either him or myself. Michael Meacher MP is already very knowledgeable about peak oil, as is Irish TD (=MP) Eamon Ryan, a French MP, former Canadian Secretary General, a Swiss MP... the list is growing. See for details of a successful conference we had a few weeks ago in Lisbon at which they all spoke.

Also, to find answers to questions like the one you had here, try the search box on the website. Over the coming weeks I'll be adding a wealth of knowledge on the subject.

Hmm, appears to be a problem with our link extractor. Am on it.

In May 2004 the UK was a net importer by weight, but not across the year. I think some of the figures are by the week so you get 4 week and 5 week months which makes them not that good on a monthly basis.
