To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations the high commission in Gaborone has made to the Botswanan authorities concerning the threatened deportation of Professor Ken Good; and if he will make a statement on (a) academic freedom and (b) respect for human rights in Botswana.

Professor Good is an Australian national; as such, consular assistance is being provided by the Australian high commission in Pretoria. It is not our practice to offer consular assistance to foreign nationals.
We have made clear to the authorities in Botswana, through our high commission in Gaborone, the importance that we attach to academic freedom and respect for human rights.

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
