This Government are committed to improving access to elective surgery for all patients. By the end of 2005, the maximum inpatient waiting time will be reduced to six months. By the end of 2008, the maximum wait will be just 18 weeks from general practitioner referral to start of treatment. It is for the National Health Service to decide how best to improve access locally in order to meet these national standards.
