To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners are estimated to suffer from mental health problems in prisons in England and Wales.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) undertook a survey of mental ill health in the prison population of England and Wales in 1997. A copy of the survey is available on the ONS website at www.statistics.gov.uk.
