To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what representations he has received regarding the timescale for UK compliance with (a) MARPOL, (b) the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships 1973, (c) the Protocol of 1978 and (d) associated regulations.

The United Kingdom has ratified the MARPOL Convention and the protocols to the Convention. The United Kingdom has already implemented Annexes I, II, III and V to MARPOL in national law, and is in the process of implementing Annexes IV and VI. I have received no representations regarding the timescale for UK compliance with MARPOL.

Secretary of State

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
