To ask the Deputy Prime Minister how many members of local government pension schemes were granted ill-health retirement in each of the last three years.

The number of members granted ill-health retirement from the Local Government Pension Scheme in England and Wales in the three years commencing 2001–02 were 9,805, 7,515 and 6,784 respectively. Information about the number of ill-health retirements granted by other public service pension schemes that operate within local government is not held by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
