Environment Food and Rural Affairs written question – answered at on 25 January 2005.
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs if she will require British Greyhound Racing Board members' (a) kennels and (b) tracks to be licensed by local authorities; and if she will make a statement.
Under the proposed Animal Welfare Bill, the Secretary of State will be able to introduce secondary legislation regulating certain activities, and the welfare of racing greyhounds is a possible area for regulation. No decisions have yet been taken as to the level of regulation that should apply. Dogs in the care of man, which includes racing greyhounds, would also be protected by the welfare and cruelty provisions in the Bill.
