To ask the Secretary of State for Health To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many consultants were working in the NHS (a) on 1 January 2005 and (b) on 1 January 1997.
The latest information on consultant numbers is as at 30 June 2004, when there were 30,171 consultants employed in the NHS. This is an increase of almost 8,700 (41 per cent.) from 21,474 in September 1997.
