Northern Ireland written question – answered at on 17 January 2005.
To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many days on average were taken by the Social Security Agency in (a) 2003–04 and (b) the current financial year to date to process a new claim for pension credit; and if he will make a statement.
In 2003–04 the average time taken to clear a pension credit application was 53 days. In the current financial year to December 2004 the average time taken to clear an application has been 25.9 days.
Performance against the average clearance time (target is 12 days) has been hindered because of a backlog of claims. A recovery plan has been in place since September 2004 and the backlog should be cleared within the next two months. Claims received since September 2004 are now being processed within the 12 day target.
