In 2003, the National Audit Office (NAO) published its report of the value for money study it carried out into the Medicines Control Agency (now the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency). As part of this study, the NAO produced a supplementary report that compared the workings of regulatory bodies in six countries—the United Kingdom, France, Sweden, Netherlands, the United States of America, and Canada. The aim of the supplementary report was to draw out common issues, and highlight distinctive features of the different systems. The report can be found on the NAO website at www.nao.org.uk.

The Department has not conducted any more research into drug regulatory systems which across the EU are governed by EU legislation.
