To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what her estimate is of the average number of hours worked by UK employees in the latest year for which figures are available.

The average of hours worked (that is total hours excluding overtime) for the last year is as follows:

Spring Hours
2004 34.38
2003 34.45

These figures are produced monthly in Labour Market Trends, an ONS publication.
