Health written question – answered at on 16 July 2004.
To ask the Secretary of State for Health what countermeasures his Department recommends to protect public health in the event of (a) an incident similar to the Chernobyl disaster of April 1986 and (b) a terrorist attack on a nuclear installation which entailed the release of radioactive species to the environment.
For many years, Government have required that nuclear installations have in place plans to deal with a release of radioactive material from those sites. These plans must be sufficiently flexible to account for much larger releases than might be expected from ordinary running conditions. Each plan is site specific and details are available from the operators of each installation.
In 2002, the Department reviewed stocks of strategic materials that might be required by the national health service in the event of a terrorist attack on a major nuclear installation. For security reasons, details are not disclosed.
