To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills what estimate he has made of the total projected change in the teaching fund allocation to higher education institutions from 2003–04 to 2004–05.
The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) plans to announce its teaching and research allocations to institutions for the academic year 2004–05 in March. They estimate, however, that the funding available for teaching in that year will be £3,830 million, including funding for widening access and improving retention and for rewarding and developing staff. That represents a 5 per cent. increase on the equivalent funding for 2003–04.
