To ask the Secretary of State for Health pursuant to the answer to the hon. Member for Sutton and Cheam (Mr. Burstow), of 8 January 2003, Official Report, columns 278–79W, on general practitioners, what the figures were for the year to April 2003.
The number of whole-time equivalent general practitioners in each strategic health authority, Government office region and in England between October 1997 and March 2003 are shown in the table.

(42) GP retainers were first collected in 1999 and have been omitted for comparability purposes.

Full time = 1.00 wte;
Three quarter time = 0.69 wte;
Job share = 0.65 wte;
Half time = 0.60 wte.
