asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they oppose the proposal to withdraw the direct Leeds to Glasgow limited passenger railway service and to replace it with a Leeds to Carlisle stopping service.

The directions and guidance which we have issued to the Strategic Rail Authority require the authority to work with the rail industry to achieve substantial, lasting improvements in performance. The changes to the service you mention are part of a package designed to provide such improvements in performance.
