To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many registered charities there are in (a) England and Wales, (b) Northern Ireland and (c) Scotland.
The Charity Commission is the Government Department that registers charities in England and Wales. There are currently 186,320 registered charities in England and Wales. The Inland Revenue is responsible for the recognition of charitable status in Scotland and Northern Ireland. The Inland Revenue recognises approximately 7,500 charities in Northern Ireland and 30,025 in Scotland.
