To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, pursuant to his answer to the hon. Member for the Isle of Wight (Mr. Turner) of 30 October 2001, Official Report, column 625W, on the working families tax credit,

(1) how many applications have been selected for further inquiry;

(2) how many applications have been selected for further inquiry.

Since 1 April 2001, 18 WFTC applications have been referred for a full inquiry. Four inquiries resulted in child care being overpaid and the recovery of £4,201.88 of overpaid tax credits.
