To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many traders were dealt with by the VAT large payers unit in (a) 1997–98, (b) 1998–99, (c) 1999–2000 and (d) 2000–01; how many traders are now being dealt with by the unit; and if he will make a statement.
The number of traders dealt with by the VAT large payers unit was 10,000 in 1997–98, 13,000 in 1998–99, 13,500 in 1999–2000, 14,500 in 2000–01 and is currently around 14,900.
